Greenlee and Pam Kehaly were recently elected to The Wellness Community Valley/Ventura Board of Directors. The Wellness Community Valley/Ventura (TWCVV) is an independently governed and funded affiliate of the international Cancer Support Community, serving more than 3,000 community members affected by cancer each year with programs in the San Fernando Valley and throughout Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-getrH0qmbN0/TwsViYLA7QI/AAAAAAAAAM8/_ac3cMiJ9rY/s200/Greenlee%2Bheadshot2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5695669834088508674" />Elected to the Board in November, Leonard T. Greenlee is Facility Management Director at Baxter Healthcare Corporation in Westlake Village. He has held this leadership role for over ten years, and has been with Baxter for nearly 30 years. Greenlee holds a bachelor of science degree in computer information systems from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, and a master of science degree in telecommunications management from Golden Gate University. He served as Staff Sargeant in the United States Marine Corps for eight years. Originally from Milwaukee, Greenlee resides in Moorpark with his wife, Karla. He and Karla have three sons, three daughters-in-law and five grandchildren.

Greenlee says he has always found it rewarding to “serve a higher purpose than myself” through his work on the Boards of the Conejo Valley Chamber of Commerce, Greater Conejo Valley Community Foundation, and United Way of Ventura County. When cancer affected his own family, Greenlee saw the importance of an organization like The Wellness Community. “I lost both an aunt and uncle to cancer and I can now see how they and my cousin, their only child, would have benefitted from having access to the types of resources provided by The Wellness Community,” says Greenlee.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 154px; height: 200px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-m0TW5VbMkqE/TwsWgWNrHnI/AAAAAAAAANU/N5Li_ma-bqc/s200/pam%2Bkehaly%2B2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5695670898714680946" />Pam Kehaly was elected to the Board in December. Kehaly is President of Anthem Blue Cross, the largest health benefits company in California. Previously, she was president of national accounts for Aetna. Kehaly received a bachelor of arts degree in business administration from California State University, Stanislaus. She is on the board of the California Association of Health Plans, the California Chamber of Commerce, and LA Adaptive Business Leaders. Additionally, she is joining the newly formed Advisory Board for the Schaeffer Center for Health Policy and Economics at USC, and is an active member of the Los Angeles Division of the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Kehaly lives in Westlake Village with her husband and two sons.

Kehaly’s close friend battled breast cancer and passed away at age 30, and her mother fought the same disease and has had no evidence of cancer for the past ten years. Both experiences, along with meeting cancer patients and their families in her role at Anthem Blue Cross, have given Kehaly the desire to help make a difference. “As part of my job, I see the devastation cancer wreaks on people and their families,” she says. “Involvement with The Wellness Community gives me a way to help in a meaningful and constructive way.”

Planned Giving: An Expert Weighs In

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 150px; height: 200px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-PeGmM2qtUs4/TtQExuEFbnI/AAAAAAAAAMw/m4aXMdpsKeE/s320/Kossoffphoto.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5680170282246303346" />
‘Tis the season…to celebrate and to give back. One lasting way you can give back to a favorite charity is by making a Planned Gift. Attorney Ken Kossoff of Panitz & Kossoff, LLP is an Estate Planning, Probate and Trust Law Specialist. He is also a long-time TWCVV Board member and has been kind enough to share his expertise on Planned Giving and whether it may be an option for you.

I very much encourage clients to consider planned giving. Not all people do so. However, for those who believe their children or other family members are getting enough or have received enough during their lives, or for those people who have no children, gifts to charities are a wonderful way to leave a legacy – even if you want to do so anonymously. And for taxable estates, charitable giving allows the donor to control where their money goes, rather than leaving that to the US government to decide.

There are a number of planned giving options. Before I discuss them, I want to remind everyone that a gift during one’s life, whether in cash, appreciated stock (so the donor does not have to pay capital gains taxes), real estate or other property, is a great way not only to support a charity, but to see how the charity manages and applies your gifts so you can get some sense of how the charity will manage a planned gift that is managed and spent after your passing.

Outright Gift: In terms of planned gifts, most charities would prefer an outright gift to the charity’s general fund. This can mean naming TWCVV as a beneficiary of your trust or will, as a beneficiary of a life insurance policy, or, as discussed below, as a beneficiary of a retirement account.

Gifts from Retirement Accounts: One recent form of gift that has been allowed by legislation, but will only be available for a short time unless extended by Congress, is to allow people to make a gift from their Individual Retirement Accounts directly, during life, so that the taxpayer does not first have to take a distribution from the IRA, pay taxes on the distribution, and then make the donation. There are a lot of people with substantial retirement accounts, and when the money is taken from those accounts, it will be subject to income tax – whether taken by the account participant (the person who put money into it) or by their heirs after the participant’s death.

With a substantial estate, retirement accounts also can be hit with the estate tax, which means that a retirement account can be decimated by the income and estate tax hit. Thus, charities make good beneficiaries of retirement accounts, because charities will not have to pay income tax on the amounts received, and for taxable estates, the participant’s estate will get an estate tax deduction for the value of the gift. It is important to make sure you consult with your attorney, CPA or financial advisor, because rules regarding retirement accounts are complicated.

Charitable Remainder and Lead Trusts: One popular gift structure is called a charitable remainder trust (CRT). During life, the owner donates an appreciated asset (stocks, real estate, etc.) to a trust they create, and gets a tax deduction for the donation. The CRT pays no capital gains taxes and invests all of the donated property for the donor; if the donor had sold the assets and invested them herself, the amount invested would be after capital gains taxes that the CRT does not have to pay. During the life of the donors, or for a term of years, the income generated by the trust is paid to the donor. A CRT leaves the “remainder” – what’s left after the death of the donors or the term of years – to a charity.

Finally, for people with more than $1,000,000 to donate, private foundations can be very useful. Putting aside the good that large amounts of money can do those in need, private foundations provide families with the opportunity to involve younger generations in identifying worthy charities, and overseeing how the charitable dollars are spent.

After hearing about the many charitable options – and these are not all of them – some people employ one of them, others employ more than one, and others employ none of them and just write a check to the charity. Any decision involving a substantial gift should be made in consultation with your professional advisors.

To learn more about leaving a legacy to support the mission of TWCVV, please click here or contact president Suzanne Drace at 805-371-0417.

Remembering Nancy

In October of 2006, one year after being diagnosed with breast cancer, Nancy Colton wanted to give back to the fight against cancer. Along with her mother, Harriet Wasserman, Nancy decided to hold a Breast Cancer Awareness luncheon to raise funds for a cancer support charity. Six years later, that luncheon has grown into a beloved tradition of generosity and a way for Harriet to uphold the memory of her daughter, who we sadly lost in 2009.

On October 22, Nearly 80 women gathered at the home of Harriet’s friends Debbie and Scott Steinhart for the Sixth Annual Luncheon. The group included longtime friends, family members, and fellow support group members from The Wellness Community Valley/Ventura (TWCVV). This year, the funds raised at the luncheon were donated to TWCVV, where Nancy and Harriet found hope and friendship through support groups, yoga, and other programs when Nancy was going through treatment. So that more of the funds from the luncheon could go directly to TWCVV, all of the food was donated by two catering companies that Harriet’s son is involved in: Bruce’s Catering and Lunchbox.

Since her election to the Board of Directors in 2006, Harriet has been a champion for TWCVV through her leadership and constant dedication. “I really enjoy being on the Board, and I look forward to each fundraising event to help keep the doors of TWCVV open,” says Harriet. When asked what keeps her motivated to take on the planning and hosting duties of the luncheon each year, she says, “My motivation is to keep giving back in Nancy’s name and to keep her memory alive.”

Nancy’s memory was ever-present at this year’s luncheon, in the minds of all the women who attended, and in the words of a speech she had first given three years ago, which Harriet repeated. Nancy’s sense of humor jumps off the page, but she also manages to make the poignancy of the gathering come alive with just a simple sentence at the end.

Below is Nancy’s speech from 2008, read by Harriet at the 2011 luncheon:

As I look around today we have gathered together quite an eclectic group of women. There are women here that have been friends with my mom since they were kids growing up, women who have known me since I was a kid growing up. There are women that I’ve been friends with for close to 30 years whose wedding and baby showers we attended. There are friends from the office, friends from the “hood,” friends who I share with on a weekly basis as part of my support group at TWC. There are people here that don’t know me at all, or have met me only once at an event. And there are family members and friends of my mom or mine who were inspired to bring some of their friends along today.

Now some of you that were here last year may be back hoping that my brother again made his famous bread pudding. He did. And there may be some who are here because of the chance to win one of the coveted raffle prizes, there are many. But I believe the truth is you are here because there is a special bond, a unique energy that is truly powerful and empowering when we gather together a group of women to help our mothers, daughters, sisters and friends.

One Family, Many Lives Touched

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-XFS4c3PhRYI/Tm9wMvGyfuI/AAAAAAAAAMY/UpsX4liLXCQ/s320/wank%2Bfamily.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5651859421478944482" />David Wank became a supporter of The Wellness Community Valley/Ventura after seeing how much the organization helped his father during his experience with bladder cancer more than ten years ago. David was elected to the Board of Directors of TWCVV in 2003 and has chaired the Building and Grounds Committee since 2006. David’s unwavering perseverance and dedication helped make the Garden of Hope a reality. His wife Tami and their three children, Justin 14, Hayley 12, and Morgan, 9, have all found their own ways to help support the cancer patients and families who rely on TWCVV for hope. David was kind enough to share his family’s story with us.

Your connection to The Wellness Community Valley/Ventura is through your father, who benefited from their services during his fight with cancer. How did TWCVV help him?

I think this could be said best in my father's words. My father, Melvin, was a strong proud man who would not ask anyone for help, yet, he turned to The Wellness Community for support when he found out he had bladder cancer in 1998. In early 2000, after an MRI reported that his cancer was gone (unfortunately this was false), he wrote a note to The Wellness Community. Unfortunately, he was never able to send it.

After his passing I found the note while cleaning out his desk. The note thanks [Co-Founder and VP of Programs] Marty, [group facilitator] Tony, [group facilitator] Peggy and others for their love and concern for him. He goes on and says, “The most important things are love of family, friends, positive attitude, doctors, medicine, and The Wellness Community.” He ends his note by saying, “Tell my fellow cancer patients never give up.”

For my father to thank The Wellness Community for their love and support showed me how important The Wellness Community is in helping others.

What made you go from being an appreciative family member of a participant, to a dedicated supporter of The Wellness Community's mission?

I felt I wanted to help those who helped my father during the toughest battle of his life.

How did you get involved in chairing the Building and Grounds Committee? How did this lead to the idea of the Garden of Hope?

I was asked to Chair the Building and Grounds Committee in 2006. At the time I was one of the only board members working in commercial real estate.

Being in real estate, I enjoy looking at property and figuring out what might make a building more desirable. I always felt that The Wellness Community’s property was underutilized. I was also informed that we could use more office and group space. We knew we could not expand the building so we started looking for different options.

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-7ilqipDiHIQ/Tm9waB6JlPI/AAAAAAAAAMg/VJPmmn-j6Fg/s320/groundbreaking.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5651859649864504562" />Ken Kossoff, past President of the board, and I thought it would be ideal to utilize the corner of the property and to make the property more functional. At the time the front was just a very big lawn. Both of us were aware of the Cancer Survivors’ Garden in Palm Springs. We decided that it would be ideal to have the front of the building be a nice garden where people could come, sit, contemplate, and relax with an added benefit of having groups and classes outside. With a lot of help from others and a very supportive Board of Directors we went ahead and started what is now the Garden of Hope.

In 2005 you opened your home to the public for the Holiday Homes Tour, one of TWCVV’s largest fundraisers. What made your family decide to take on this commitment?

My wife, Tami, is amazing. When we were asked if we would include our home in the Holiday Homes Tour, we never thought twice about not having it.

Tami and I never decorated our house for the holidays before, so we hired decorators, shopped for decorations, and turned our home into a festive delight. We had a great and unforgettable time. To quote my wife Tami, “It was one of the most gratifying experiences and fulfilling in so many ways. It was very exciting to see so many people enjoying our home. Our children were filled with such pride and a time they will always remember.”

After the Holiday Homes Tour, since our home was already decorated, we threw a holiday party and invited the Board of Directors and friends. We had a donation box and raised money for The Wellness Community

Can you describe how your children have supported TWCVV and encouraged others to do the same?

I am so proud of my children, Justin 14, Hayley 12, and Morgan 9. Each one of them, at their own choosing, decided for some of their birthdays they would not ask for presents but ask their guests to donate money to The Wellness Community Valley/Ventura. Other friends of my children have also done the same for their birthday parties.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-zj1cpqInHbQ/Tm9wkzzu79I/AAAAAAAAAMo/uKeu1Luybgk/s320/wanks%2Bat%2Bgala.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5651859835058057170" />What has motivated you and your family to continue being such strong supporters of TWCVV throughout the years?

As with my father, The Wellness Community helps those who are in need. Once you or a loved one has cancer enter their lives you feel lost and alone, not knowing where to go. Having the support of The Wellness Community helps during very trying times. Also, I feel by helping The Wellness Community I can actually see what our time and money go to and how it helps others. It's a wonderful feeling.

Photo Captions: Top - David, Tami, and their two daughters attend the ribbon cutting ceremony for the Garden of Hope. The seminar and networking group are open to lung cancer patients, survivors and family members. The lung cancer networking group meets on the first and third Tuesday of each month at 6:30pm, beginning July 5, at the same address as the seminar. Psychotherapist Peggy Johnston, MFT will facilitate. Johnston has been a cancer support group facilitator at The Wellness Community for 11 years. The seminar and the group are both free, but registration is required. Call (805) 379-4777 to register or learn more.

In April, for the first time in four decades, the National Cancer Institute reported a decline in lung cancer deaths for women. The lung cancer death rate for men began to decrease in the early 1990s. In the seminar Dr. Garon will discuss additional encouraging trends in treatment, clinical trials, and management of side effects. Dr. Garon is a physician and researcher at the University of California, Los Angeles. He has been awarded a UCLA Lung SPORE Career Development Award in 2007, a Hirshberg Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research award in 2007, the Tower Cancer Research Foundation Career Development Award in 2008, and a Lincy Foundation Grant in 2008. His interests are in gastrointestinal, pancreatic and lung oncology. Dr. Garon sees patients and conducts clinical trials at his private practice in Santa Monica.

The seminar kicks off a new support group geared exclusively to lung cancer patients and survivors. The group will be led by a professional therapist and is free of charge.

Kathy Joosten, a ten-year lung cancer survivor and an Emmy Award-winning actress, encouraged The Wellness Community to form a group to address the specific needs of lung cancer patients and survivors. “I am delighted that they are forming this group because it is essential for lung cancer patients to find support from people who are undergoing the same kinds of fears, expenses, body changes, chemotherapy, and radiation,” says Joosten, who senses a “subtle agreement” among people, even patients themselves, to not talk about lung cancer as much as other types of cancer. She adds, “We need a place where people who have remained silent until now can come together and talk about the disease.” Joosten has starred on many hit television series including The West Wing and Desperate Housewives.

Free Seminar Will Present New Advances in Prostate Cancer Treatment

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 113px; height: 146px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-LBlGsExKDAk/Te_P_5L7RmI/AAAAAAAAALo/1RzxrNwWeTM/s320/robertprincenthal.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5615935956943849058" />
Dr. Robert Princenthal will present “Advances in Prostate MRI, Detection and Staging” on Saturday, June 18 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at The Wellness Community Valley/Ventura, 530 Hampshire Road, Westlake Village, CA 91361. This seminar is part of The Wellness Community’s professional support services offered to prostate cancer patients and their loved ones, including a monthly networking group and a bi-weekly support group. Dr. Princenthal received his M.D. from Penn State University College of Medicine. He completed his residency in diagnostic radiology at Yale Univeristy School of Medicine and completed a fellowship at the University of California, San Diego. Research has found that young adult cancer survivors often lack access to professionally led services geared toward the specific emotional issues they face. Psychological support is an essential element of healing and recovery from cancer.

The Wellness Community Valley/Ventura (TWCVV), a leader in providing support groups to people affected by cancer, partnered with the United Cancer Advocacy Action Network (UCAAN) to extend their quality programs to young adults. UCAAN was founded by Rachel Shur, a leukemia survivor diagnosed and treated in her early thirties. Studies show that patients receiving psychosocial support experience less pain, stress and depression, are more likely to comply with medical treatment, experience fewer recurrences, and, in many cases, are able to enjoy a better quality of life and live longer.

“This group will cover the unique needs of young adult cancer survivors, including dating, taking care of a young family, career concerns, and finding alternative ways to cope with treatment side effects,” says group facilitator Gina Cole, MS, MFT. Cole is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and a certified trained facilitator with a private practice in Ventura.

About The Wellness Community Valley/Ventura
Celebrating its 20th Anniversary in 2011, The Wellness Community Valley/Ventura is an independently governed and funded affiliate of the Cancer Support Community, serving more than 3,000 community members affected by cancer each year with programs in the San Fernando Valley and throughout Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties. Hesselgesser held the very first fundraiser for The Wellness Community Valley/Ventura, is a charter founding member, and has served on the Professional Advisory Board for many years. Dr. Hesselgesser and his wife, Jane, generously opened their home for a spectacular French impressionistic garden party, the first event ever held to help TWCVV open its doors. Jane Hesselgesser, an international concert pianist, gave a memorable performance at the North Ranch Community Center to raise additional funds.

A graduate of USC and New York Medical College, Dr. Hesselgesser completed his residency in radiation oncology at LA County USC Medical Center and has been Board-certified for more than 35 years. He is a specialist in radioactive implants with high and low dose rate Iridium-192, and has lectured internationally on the topic. He has performed over 250 I-125 prostate implants, one of the largest series done by a single physician. Dr. Hesselgesser practices with North Oaks Radiation Oncology Center, in Thousand Oaks and Westlake Radiation Oncology Center in Westlake Village.

Although he intended to specialize in OB/GYN, a lecture in medical school on the wonders of radiation oncology sparked his interest. Decades later, his passion for his work is stronger than ever. “Giving patients hope and being able to offer something that can benefit them is the most rewarding aspect of my work,” says Dr. Hesselgesser. “Aside from the benefits of radiation oncology, I also really enjoy the science involved. The fact that you need to be an expert on all aspects of the human body forces you to be a real Marcus Welby of cancer care!”

“Dr. Hesselgesser listens to me and allows me to be a full partner in my treatment,” says Kathy Joosten, a ten-year lung cancer survivor. “His explanations of how the treatment works, even down to the cellular level, help me believe in the efficacy of the treatment.”

Dr. Hesselgesser lives in Westlake Village with his wife, Jane, and has “a ton” of hobbies including collecting rare objects from coins to dinosaur bones. Dr. and Mrs. Hesselgesser’s son James is VP of Program Development for an aircraft parts manufacturer. Their son Alex works for the San Diego Police Department and is a 2nd Lieutenant in the Marine Reserves.

Celebration of Hope: Mervyn Kopp

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1M96TqzZ3kU/TbWAuHZ5NyI/AAAAAAAAAK0/ddVOKyfIKzs/s320/Mervs%2BPick%2BCropped.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5599523241455073058" />It was May 18, 2006 – Merv Kopp’s birthday. In the past two months he had been diagnosed with leiomyosarcoma, (a rare and aggressive cancer), and had two surgeries in his right maxillary sinus. On a day when he should have been celebrating, he began the first of 33 radiation treatments. Rather than lament his situation, he decided to give himself a goal; he bought a brand new mountain bike. “The bike arrived before treatment ended, and it drove me nuts seeing it in my kitchen every day, but it made me vow to become as strong as possible as soon as possible,” says Merv.

This is how Merv takes on life and inspires everyone around him. He has no time for self-pity, preferring instead to follow Monty Python’s lead and “Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life.”

As a delegate to the inaugural Lance Armstrong Foundation LIVESTRONG Cancer Survivors Summit in October 2006, Merv was inspired to do something to help cancer survivors in his community. As an Honorary Rotarian and past president of the Thousand Oaks Rotary Club, he had spoken locally about the power of a positive attitude, using humor. He decided to produce a stand-up comedy show FUN-draiser for The Wellness Community Valley/Ventura. Five years later, Merv is responsible for three successful Stand Up for Cancer Survivors Comedy FUN-draisers at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza, and TWCVV uses the proceeds to produce a monthly Monday Comedy Night, “Laughter IS the best Medicine” for people affected by cancer. More than 1,100 people have been regaled by 34 professional comics, all thanks to Merv’s dedication and nonstop energy.

In early 2009, Merv’s cancer returned. After eight months of chemotherapy Merv once again has No Evidence of Cancer. Through all of this, Merv continues to work diligently to bring laughter to cancer patients, survivors, and family members in our community. “Laughter is the bridge we take to leave the dark side and get to the other side,” says Merv. “Maybe your glass is only one-sixteenth full, but at least it's got something in it. To quote Norman Cousins: ‘Laughter IS the best medicine.’ So, take your medicine!”

Celebration of Life: Norman MacDonald and Leonard Chapman, The Honey-Do Boys

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 218px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wyVeZcGU4ZM/TbWAucOM29I/AAAAAAAAAK8/POKfZUg6VKw/s320/Top%2BChoice%2BCropped2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5599523247043173330" />For anyone with a “Honey-Do” list and no “Honey” to help, Norman MacDonald and Leonard Chapman of the Honey-Do Boys are just a phone call away. By donating their handyman skills, the Honey-Do Boys help TWCVV continue its mission of providing support, education and hope to cancer patients and their families without having to take staff time and financial resources to tend to the facility.

Norm and his wife Kathy got involved with TWCVV in 1996 when Kathy was diagnosed with lymphoma. Kathy was passionate about helping others affected by cancer, and spoke at fundraisers and local groups about her experience. She passed away in 2005 after living nine years longer than the doctors predicted. Norm believes Kathy exceeded doctors’ expectations in part because of TWCVV. “They opened her eyes to the fact that she wasn’t alone, and she felt like she could do something to help,” says Norm. “That was her will to live.”

After retiring from 37 years as an aviation mechanic, Norm and his neighbor Len formed the Honey-Do boys in 2003 and continue to donate their handyman skills to TWCVV and Habitat for Humanity. Although Len is retired after 48 years in the home improvement industry, he has never slowed down. “It’s a great satisfaction to do a job, do it right, and do it well,” says Len, who is a cancer survivor.

When TWCVV’s south wall was reconstructed Norm and Len took on one of their largest projects, installing new floors and painting the support group rooms. Lianne Ingalla is one of many participants who enjoyed the transformation. “The changes have been a subtle uplift to our collective spirits,” says Lianne, an interior designer and a breast cancer survivor. “The sleek floors immediately enriched the rooms, and clean paint added to the renewal.”

“The most precious thing we have is our time, and The Wellness Community gave me time with my wife that I would not have had,” says Norm. “It’s a debt I could never repay, but at least I’m getting closer.” We at TWCVV extend our deepest gratitude for the precious time that the Honey-Do Boys have donated to our cause.

Celebration of Philanthropy: Mr. Hugh E. Petersen in memoriam

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 280px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-cdKRft4uvmE/TbWAur2LL1I/AAAAAAAAALE/EjEph25wRt4/s320/Hugh%2BPetersen2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5599523251237367634" />On behalf of the thousands of people who have found solace within the walls of The Wellness Community Valley/Ventura, we would like to thank Mr. Hugh Petersen for giving us a home. Hugh donated the building that houses TWCVV in 1995, but his remarkable generosity extends far beyond this extraordinary gift. It would be impossible to measure the lives changed for the better by Hugh, especially because he never sought credit for his kindness.

Hugh Petersen was born in 1918 and spent his childhood in Kenilworth, Illinois. He graduated from Princeton University with Honors in Economics and entered the family business in 1940 when his father became ill. By day he ran the J.W. Petersen Coal and Oil Company in Chicago while at night attending Northwestern Law School and later receiving an MBA from the University of Chicago.

Hugh met and married Marjorie Stone in 1968, telling his family it was the best thing he had ever done in his life. After ten years of marriage, they decided to “retire” to Santa Barbara. He liquidated the company in 1978, which had become the largest distributor of coal and fuel oil in the country.

In 1972, he purchased the La Arcada Investment Corporation in Santa Barbara, which included the La Arcada Building and other commercial properties including a bank building in Thousand Oaks. He devoted himself to transforming the La Arcada building and courtyard into a beautiful area for the community to enjoy, filling it with treasures collected and commissioned from around the world. He treated his many tenants like family. It was his delight to donate the building in Thousand Oaks to TWCVV, an organization he believed gave tremendous service, support and hope to those with cancer. Innumerable individuals and students, churches, colleges and universities, Christian organizations and community projects have benefited from his legendary generosity.

No One Should Face Cancer Alone

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 169px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_MibEAOLVSkE/TN7TdDlA1mI/AAAAAAAAAGs/-SkSD_8enGc/s400/twc_eblast%2Bphoto.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5539097087842506338" />
"There is no price tag for the support I received from The Wellness Community Valley/Ventura. From that moment on Kopp would spend much of his time laughing and bringing joy into the lives of others.

Merv, a UCLA graduate and father of two, recalls the first time he realized something was wrong. “I used to ride my bike during my lunch breaks. During one of my rides I discovered I could not breathe out of my right nostril.” After his first trip to an Ear, Nose, and Throat specialist it was revealed that he has a deviated septum. Additional X-rays concluded that Merv had a small mass blocking his nasal passage. The mass was removed on March 9, 2005 and a few days later he received a call saying it was cancerous.

Merv’s passion and zest for life never allowed him to have a moment of self-pity. He recalls his first thoughts as being calls for action, “What do we need to do to take care of this? Who do I have to see?” He underwent wide margin surgery to ensure the removal of all cancerous cells and after 33 doses of radiation he thought his journey with cancer was over.

In early 2010, Merv began to experience shooting pains down his arm and abdominal region. After many tests and trips to the doctors it was revealed that the LMS had in fact returned and the cancer treatment started up once again.

Through all of this Merv has managed to keep a smile on his face and even bring smiles to those around him. After attending the Lance Armstrong Cancer Survivor Summit in 2006, Kopp had an overwhelming sense to give back to the community and to help those with cancer. What better way than to provide hope and smiles to those diagnosed with cancer?

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_MibEAOLVSkE/TD3d3XSTPaI/AAAAAAAAAGM/swZS_X03qRw/s200/merv-stand+up.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5493791063675190690" />He began producing Stand up for Cancer Survivors, an annual fundraising comedy event for The Wellness Community Valley/Ventura. “I like laughing and having a good time,” he says. “Laughter is the bridge we take to leave the dark side and get to the other side.” (Merv is pictured, left, at the 2009 Stand Up for Cancer Survivors event.) Along with planning the annual comedy night, Merv diligently works on bringing comedians to The Wellness Community once a month for a series called Comedy Night: Laughter IS the Best Medicine. (Wellness Community participants are pictured, right, enjoying a Comedy Night event.)

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 180px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_MibEAOLVSkE/TD3dffa2LcI/AAAAAAAAAF8/0KXaNaAn-Zc/s320/leanne2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5493790653541658050" />Merv describes himself as always being the class clown. “I liked the attention when I was younger but now I can use humor in a positive way.” His favorite aspect of Comedy Night is “seeing all the people laughing - that’s when I know the plan has come together.” He continues by saying, “I am so happy to be able to work with the people at The Wellness Community and the organization itself. Ken is a certified Specialist in Estate Planning, Probate & Trust Law by the State Bar of California Board of Legal Specialization.

Naming The Wellness Community Valley/Ventura (TWCVV) as a beneficiary on a retirement account can be a win-win situation - benefiting both TWCVV and the family of the account holder.

Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) are a great way to save for retirement: (a) taxes are deferred on earnings – hopefully there are earnings, in spite of market gyrations, over the lengthy period of time that most people accumulate their retirement savings; and (b) income tax is paid by the person who created the IRA only on the amount of the distributions that are taken out of the IRAs. Thus, most people think it is best to take out as little as possible, meaning they do not take distributions until they are forced to, and even then, they take only minimum distributions.

The problem with minimum distributions is that retirement accounts were really created by the government to encourage people to save for retirement. They were not created to pass to the next generation, but by taking only minimum distributions, many people leave retirement accounts with substantial savings to their surviving family members.

Regardless of whether the funds in an IRA are taken out by the person who created and funded the account or their after-death beneficiaries, income tax will have to be paid on the amounts withdrawn.

Moreover, if the account holder's estate is subject to estate taxes, the beneficiaries of the IRA can end up losing 70% to 80% in taxes. That means that for taxable estates, the beneficiaries of IRAs will get only pennies on the dollar. While there is no estate tax in 2010, in 2011, any estate over $1,000,000 is taxable at rates starting at 55%.

The only exception to paying income taxes on IRA proceeds is a donation to a qualified non-profit organization like TWCVV. If TWCVV is named as a beneficiary of your IRA, TWCVV would pay no income taxes on the IRA proceeds. At the same time, your family could get a valuable tax deduction – check with your CPA or other tax advisors on whether you would get the valuable tax benefits that are available to many taxpayers.

Thus, for someone who supports the mission and work of TWCVV, even in the absence of tax deductions, naming TWCVV as the beneficiary of your IRA can be far more valuable to the organization than it would be to your family, because TWCVV would get 100 cents on the dollar – far more than your family would get even in the best of circumstances.

Last year, there was an exception that allowed people to give their IRAs to qualified charities such as TWCVV during their life, without having to pay income tax on the proceeds before contributing them to a charity. While that tremendous benefit expired, Congress is in the midst of negotiating an extension of that law to December 31, 2010. If that happens, we will let you know.

To learn more, please contact Suzanne Drace at 805.371.0417.

Learn ten more ways to leave a legacy of hope through Planned Giving.

Help Change the Breast Cancer Experience

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 76px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_MibEAOLVSkE/TCJDRu4CE6I/AAAAAAAAAFs/Z9aqhCmRfv0/s320/CSR_BC_MAP_Color.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5486021268010570658" />
The Wellness Community Valley/Ventura knows that breast cancer is more than just treating the disease; there are often emotional and social challenges that may cause distress during a cancer experience. In a recent study of women affected by breast cancer, those who received emotional and social support had lower distress levels, were less likely to have a recurrence, had better overall health and were more likely to live longer compared those who did not receive the emotional and social support component.

But more research is needed to determine the social and emotional needs of breast cancer survivors, where there are gaps in care and how we can fill those gaps. That is why we hope you’ll help spread the word about The Cancer Survivor Registry: Breast Cancer M.A.P. (Mind Affects the Physical) Project, a new movement to identify and address the emotional and social needs that accompany a breast cancer diagnosis. This registry of breast cancer survivors is a critical step in understanding the impact of breast cancer and ultimately discovering innovative ways to address them.

Participating is easy. All it takes is a few simple steps:

1. Visit www.breastcancerregistry.org and create an account! It only takes 10 minutes to answer some simple background questions. (We’ll even give you a peek at how your fellow survivors have answered.)
2. Once a year, answer questions about your experience with breast cancer.
3. Enjoy access to M.A.P. Stage by stage, the cyclists are determined to stay focused and never give up until they reach their goal.

It takes even more determination to fight cancer. Through diagnosis, treatment, and recovery, cancer patients and their families struggle to face each challenge with courage and focus. And just as it takes a team of cyclists to help one break away from the pack and take the lead, it takes a strong support system to help one person fight cancer.

The similarities between athletic endurance events and the cancer journey will be very clear during this year's Amgen Tour of California, all because of Breakaway from Cancer(r). Founded in 2005 by Amgen as a complementary component to its title sponsorship of the race, Breakaway from Cancer is a national initiative to increase awareness of the important resources available to cancer patients from prevention to education and support to financial assistance and survivorship.

Leading up to and during the eight-day, 800-mile 2010 Amgen Tour of California, multiple Breakaway from Cancer activities will take place to recognize, honor and celebrate cancer survivors.

Breakaway from Cancer will also provide resources to its charitable partners - the Prevent Cancer Foundation, Cancer Support Community, Patient Advocate Foundation and National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship. These organizations provide indispensable support and advocacy to people with cancer and their families, including our participants here at The Wellness Community Valley/Ventura.

We invite you to join Breakaway from Cancer in their support of families touched by cancer. All it takes is a text message! Just text BREAKAWAY to 90999 to donate $10 to Breakaway from Cancer*.

Please visit www.breakawayfromcancer.com to learn more.

* Standard text messaging rates apply. Heroes don’t just exist in comic books – they’re real people who have chosen to make a difference one day at a time.

A Masterful Moment

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 225px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_MibEAOLVSkE/S8S726Y7nFI/AAAAAAAAAEE/mMClrd4yUYA/s320/alg_phil-mickelson_amy.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5459695200341040210" />
Phil Mickelson’s win at the Masters on Sunday was a stunning reminder of how cancer brings a family together. After clinching his third (but arguably his most memorable) Masters victory, Phil met his wife Amy behind the 18th green with a great big bear hug and we all got to see a single tear roll down Lefty’s cheek as they embraced. It was enough to make even the most die-hard Tiger, Boom Boom or Lee fan more than a little verklempt.

This was the first tournament Amy Mickelson had been able to attend in person after being diagnosed with breast cancer 11 months ago. In fact, Phil wasn’t sure whether Amy would be strong enough to make it that day. Happily she found the strength to be there, along with their three children, and Phil’s mother Mary Mickelson who was also sadly diagnosed with breast cancer in July.

When cancer touches a family, it changes everything. After Amy’s diagnosis, Phil suspended his PGA Tour schedule so he could be with his wife through treatment. Once it was determined that Amy’s prognosis was good, Phil planned to return to golf, only to be blindsided by his mother’s diagnosis. He took another leave from the Tour.

We see how cancer affects families every day at The Wellness Community. That’s why we offer programs that provide hope, support, and knowledge to the whole family, not just the patient. These programs include:

· Family Support Groups: Facilitated by professional psychotherapists with extensive training and experience working with people affected by cancer.

· Networking Groups: People with cancer and their loved ones can connect with others dealing with the same type of cancer.

· Kids Circle: A group for children who have a parent or grandparent with cancer. With the guidance of professional psychotherapists, kids play games, make art projects, and talk with others who know what it’s like to be part of a family dealing with cancer.

· Transition Group: For those who have experienced the loss of a loved one due to cancer.

We also offer stress reduction programs such as yoga and guided imagery, plus creative programs like watercolors and knitting. A variety of guest speakers offer insight and expertise on everything from treatment to nutrition, finances and beyond.

In celebration of families everywhere who are facing cancer together, we’d like to offer the Mickelson family our congratulations and encourage them to keep holding on to what’s important. There will always be another Masters to win or lose, but our families are the ones who are there waiting for us on the 18th green.

For more information about our free programs, please visit our website or call 805.379.4777.

How To Be a Good Friend

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 142px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_MibEAOLVSkE/S6FOxUontPI/AAAAAAAAADM/cztwtqDlcdI/s200/woman+and+child-from+gala.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5449723633354650866" />At our cancer support center in Westlake Village, CA we have a small brochure called "How to be a good friend to a person with cancer."

We're posting the content here in the hopes that it will helpful to anyone with a friend or loved one who is fighting cancer. Be sincere and specific so that they know you mean it. If they can’t come up with anything, ask again in another week or so.
...Use disposable dishwares when delivering food to reduce the stress of returning them.
...With their approval, arrange a phone or email chain to update friends on their condition, treatment, etc.
...Offer to help by driving them to appointments, taking their kids to childcare, and doing house cleaning, gardening, cooking, shopping, yard work, or babysitting.
...Respect how they choose to deal with their cancer.
...Tell them about the support, education, and hope they can find at The Wellness Community.

Don’t...
...Tell them that everything’s going to be okay because you don’t know.
...Tell them you know how they feel because you probably don’t.
...Be afraid to admit that you don’t know what to say when you really are at a loss for words.
...Hesitate to call them or leave a message to let them know you’re thinking of them.
...Avoid the subject of cancer if that’s what they really want to talk about.
...Be afraid to talk about your life. Just because they are sick doesn’t mean that they are not interested in hearing about you.
...Discount the real feelings they may be having by telling them not to feel that way, not to worry, not to be scared, or not to cry.
...Share advice unless asked.
...Be afraid to talk about difficult subjects. You are giving other people the opportunity to support a cause that has affected everyone in one way or another. During my fundraising, I found out that there were members of my family that I never knew had cancer. You have to remember that you aren’t asking for money for yourself. This is about helping other people.

TWCVV: Why do you think The Wellness Community is a worthy cause for Team Wellness members to raise funds for?

This is such an amazing organization. It not only helps the person with the disease but it helps their family members as well. Support is so important and being with people who are going through the same thing you are doesn’t really make it easier but it makes you feel like you aren’t alone and to me, that is scarier than anything out there.

TWCVV: What other racing events have you participated in and can you describe the experience?

Melissa: In 2007, I was part of a cancer charity team. During that time, I ran in the Great Race of Agoura 15k (the 5k and 10k in the same day) and the San Diego Rock n’ Roll Half marathon. I had never run before and I was skeptical that I would be able to complete a half marathon. Now, I run every day and I am always looking for new ways of challenging myself. The thrill of the race and the competition is exhilarating but crossing the finish line is better than anything I have ever experienced.

Our heartfelt thanks to Melissa for participating in Team Wellness and sharing her thoughts with us. Please consider joining, supporting, or raising awareness for Team Wellness. For more info visit our website or call 805.379.4777. During the last 2-3 months of the year, I started reflecting on what had happened and what kind of person I had become. I was just a blob on the earth who wasn’t contributing anything to society and I realized that I needed to make some serious changes. The time that I took to reflect enabled me to set goals that would not only better my life, but better the lives of other people. I decide to go back to school to become a nurse and to volunteer my time. Making those decisions and changing so much about my life has made me feel like I have a purpose.

TWCVV: Why are you excited about participating on Team Wellness?

Melissa: I LOVE RUNNING!! I love to be around the people that participate because of their energy and spirit for giving.

TWCVV: You've done several races for charities. What's rewarding about it?

Melissa: In 2007, I raised money for a cancer charity and ran the San Diego Rock n’ Roll Half Marathon. I will never forget being half way through and feeling like I wanted to give up. My ankles hurt, I was hot, and I had blisters on my feet… I was just miserable! When I looked at the people who were all around me that had photos of their loved ones on their t-shirts and names of people written on their arms that they were racing for, I was so inspired. I was a part of something that was so much bigger than me and bigger than the race itself. My blisters and ankles were nothing in comparison.

TWCVV: Was fundraising easier than you thought it would be?

Melissa: Absolutely! I have never encountered so many generous people in my life. I took advantage of as many fundraising tools as I could. I not only mailed letters to friends and family but I had a website, I had a pizza night at Lamppost Pizza where a percentage of the proceeds were donated to the charity, I knocked on my neighbors doors and I made a ton of phone calls. People who I never thought would give money were exceedingly generous.

Stay tuned for PART TWO of our conversation with Melissa...coming soon to The Hope Herald. In the meantime, you can register or learn more on our website.

In the News...

We're excited to share some recent news coverage involving people and programs at The Wellness Community Valley/Ventura:

Lance Orozco, award-winning News Director for KCLU 88.3 FM, interviewed TWC V/V Co-Founder and VP of Programs Marty Nason, RN, MN, and TWC V/V participant Linda Scott. I've learned how to be open to the abundant caring and support of others. I've learned, at new levels how to say "yes please" and "thank you" with deep gratitude.
-Mark, a breast cancer caregiver and Wellness Community participant

The role of cancer caregiver is a challenging one, indeed. Cancer caregivers devote time and energy to their loved one—providing physical, emotional, financial, spiritual or logistical support—and often do not take the time to focus on their own needs.

There is a great need to address the wellbeing of cancer caregivers and arm them with strategies and skills that enhance their ability to provide supportive care to their loved ones while avoiding burnout.

In response to this need, The Wellness Community – with support from The Breast Cancer Fund of National Philanthropic Trust – has developed the CAREing & COPEing workshop.

This exciting 4-week program, beginning January 12, 2010, will provide education and support to people with breast cancer and loved ones. Each week, participants will gather for two hours to learn more about how to live through and beyond breast cancer. Participants will join in a group setting working in pairs; each pair consisting of the cancer survivor and her support person. The series is free of charge.

We are currently seeking breast cancer patients, survivors, and their caregivers who are interested in participating in the CAREing & COPEing program. An interview and pre-registration is required. Early registration is encouraged as space is limited and will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Participants must register in pairs containing one breast cancer patient and one caregiver, whether spouse, sibling, child, friend or other family member. If you are interested in learning more, please contact Jodi McIntosh at (805) 379-4777.

Watch our Garden Grow

The Garden of Hope started as the seed of an idea. It sprouted thanks to the generosity of its supporters, and is now blossoming into the dream we envisioned so many months ago.

Located at the corner of Hampshire Road and Townsgate Boulevard in Westlake Village, the garden will be an outdoor sanctuary for cancer patients and their families who come to The Wellness Community for programs of support, education, and hope.

You can see photos of the progress on our Facebook page.

Thanks to Reyes Masonry, the Tribute Wall of Hope is taking shape. Mr Bob Reyes and his team constructed the footings and poured the foundation on Saturday, October 31st. On November 7th a team from Reyes was back at work volunteering their time to build the tribute wall. They will contribute their time and expertise to install the irrigation system once the wall construction is complete. Installation of the walkway will follow. Hunter Industries has generously donated all of the irrigation equipment.

If you have an opportunity, please support these great companies who are making a difference in the lives of families affected by cancer and giving the gift of hope.

If you would like to volunteer and help lay the bricks or the sod, please let us know.

Time is running out! Only a few naming opportunities are available in the Garden. Who better to do that than the event organizers themselves?

Past participants Bob Ferber and Steve and Karen Furnari worked hard as co-chairs to create a fun, successful event with the first-ever Paws 4 Hope charity dog walk. We are delighted to present a Guest Post from Karen Furnari:

Walking with your dog on a sunny day in the park! What could be better? However it takes on a whole new meaning when you think about doing it as an event with lots of people and lots of dogs. When Bob Ferber, my husband Steve and I went to Berniece Bennett Park last spring to scope out and plan, we crossed our fingers that all would work out. And it did!

To everyone who helped to make the recent Paws 4 Hope Dog Walk successful, my eternal thanks and gratitude!

Our volunteer committee took on the big tasks, calling on vendors, distributing brochures, and packing goodie bags, as well as lots of duties on the big day. It was such a thrill to see the actual walk around the park begin, with proud owners and their dogs with Paws 4 Hope bandanas. My heart was pounding and tears welled in my eyes to see it all come to fruition.

The Wellness Community was literally a lifesaver for me and Steve many years ago, when he faced a six-month terminal diagnosis from Stage 4 malignant melanoma. In desperation we turned to The Wellness Community to help us deal with our fears, questions and a quest for alternative treatments. Over the years, we learned to share with and support our fellow group members every week. We became strong and Steve continued to battle the illness with humor and optimism. Now 15 years after that diagnosis, we both know that we would not be where we are today if it had not been for Wellness. We are committed to doing what we can for this amazing group of people so that their good work carries on forever.

And don't forget to come next year to the 2nd Annual Paws 4 Hope!

You can see photos from Paws 4 Hope at our website.

Merv Kopp pulled off another successful and hilarious Stand Up for Cancer Survivors Comedy FUNdraiser, due in large part to his tireless efforts and passion for finding the humor in life. We are pleased to bring you a Guest Post from Merv:

As a cancer survivor, I originally did a tremendous amount of research after my diagnosis to find an organization that could provide the social and emotional support we survivors need when we're diagnosed, during treatment, and just as importantly, after treatment ends.Further, instead of reading the verbs stricken, battled, died, when newspapers write about cancer, the words I would rather see are diagnosed, treated, survived. And I think we should add another word: SUPPORTED. Yes, supported. And that's why I came to The Wellness Community, because that's what they do - they support their participants in a marvelous fashion, at no cost to them.

Another reason for producing the Comedy evening is that so many people only talk about cancer in the most serious and negative manner. I prefer to approach cancer with humor, with comedy, with laughter, and with a smile on my face. Ergo, the "Stand Up for Cancer Survivors Comedy FUNdraiser."

The success of the October 8th show is due in great part to the fabulous support given to me by The Wellness Community's wonderful, dedicated and hard-working staff and volunteers; Thank you very much!

Opening the Door to Hope

<img style="float:left; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 149px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_MibEAOLVSkE/St8ivaoGuPI/AAAAAAAAACU/37-jFuBrhF4/s200/HHT+Logo+2009+4c.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5395069076609874162" />

You may be carving pumpkins and searching for the perfect costume, but here at The Wellness Community Valley/Ventura, we’re already deep into the Holiday Zone, and it’s for a great reason.

We recently launched ticket sales for our 18th Annual Holiday Homes Tour – our largest fundraiser, with proceeds funding our free programs of support, education and hope for people fighting cancer and for their families.

<img style="float:right; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 213px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_MibEAOLVSkE/St8iNFt1fQI/AAAAAAAAACE/2f80NNS_dck/s320/HHT-Smith-preview-2.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5395068486881213698" />The self-guided tour of four exquisite Conejo Valley homes decked out in holiday magic will take place from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5 and from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 6.

We are excited about the homes on this year’s tour. SO excited, we had to give you a sneak peak. It may be October, but why wait to get your tickets when these delights are awaiting you? You can also see photos of these homes on our website.

Elegant Christmas Encore
Visitors will get a rare glimpse into the behind-the-scenes family life of a television and film actor with “Elegant Christmas Encore” hosted by John and Elly Schneider. John Schneider is best known as the character “Bo Duke” from “The Dukes of Hazzard” television series, and his home features a collection of memorabilia from his career in the entertainment industry. Their ivy-draped Tudor-style manor in Agoura Hills surrounds visitors with holiday spirit, with seven fully decorated rooms featuring an “angelic” Christmas tree and an unusual “square” piano. A bonus boutique featuring a collection of home and holiday treasures from The Décor Store will also be available at this stop on the tour.

A “Fairy” Merry Christmas
Marla and Arnie Schwartz invite visitors to A “Fairy” Merry Christmas at their self-described “Zen-terian” (Mediterranean meets Asian) home in the North Ranch Country Club Estates of Westlake Village. Seven Christmas trees throughout the home reflect themes as varied as “The Fashionista” for their clothing-designing daughter’s room, an “Under the Sea” tree in the library, and a “Winged Things” tree in the family room. The largest tree in the living room is the teal-and-brown accented “Peace and Love” tree. The Fairy Room is a must-see, reflecting Fairy Fun author Marla Schwartz’s love of the whimsical creatures.

European Elegance
The North Pointe home of the Family of Stephen Smith embodies "European Elegance," with gorgeous twin curved staircases in the foyer, a courtyard that wraps around the entire home has been transformed to celebrate the season, and exquisite trees that are seamlessly decorated and displayed along with a beautiful menorah matching the tasteful elegance that abounds throughout the Italian/European-style home.

Traditional Family Christmas
The spectacular beauty of the surrounding Santa Monica Mountains provides the inspiration for a Traditional Family Christmas at the home of Mike and Doreen Jansen in the Malibu View Estates of Agoura Hills. Their tree holds a treasured collection of china ornaments, each one hand-painted by the owner’s mother and given as a gift to the family. From the festive and inviting foyer to the gorgeous dual island kitchen where baking abounds, the Jansen home radiates warmth and family. Click here to see a photo of this fun and friendly home.

Tickets are $25 until Oct. 31, $30 Nov. 1 – Dec. 6, and $35 at the door. Click here to purchase tickets online. They also worked on interior improvements to the building that houses our free cancer support programs.

You can see photos of the volunteers from Amgen and Baxter at our website.

Volunteers celebrated United Way’s 20th annual Day of Caring on September 26 by continuing work on the Garden, bringing our dream even closer to a reality. You can read all about it in the Ventura County Star.

These are just some of the many stories of caring and selflessness that are embedded in the fabric of our organization. Even in the leaner years (like this one) we have faith that someone, somewhere, will be inspired to lend a hand, whether it’s a donation, a day spent working in our blossoming garden, or a much-needed hug from a volunteer to a newly-diagnosed cancer patient who walks in our doors for the first time.

Please visit our website to learn more about ways you can make a difference.

It’s for a good cause, dog-gonnit!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_MibEAOLVSkE/SrJSSlD7D-I/AAAAAAAAABs/Ex9etqvscEs/s200/dexter3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5382454983800852450" />
On October 4th we're offering a fun way to involve your furry friends (of the canine variety) in philanthropy. Can’t make it or don’t own a dog? You can still help by texting PAWS to 90999 to donate $5 up to five times each month.*

Here are some thoughts from the hard-working event organizers, who were helped in a big way by The Wellness Community Valley/Ventura and are now helping to give back:

“While the doctors can give medicines and treatment, it's The Wellness Community and the people who support it that give cancer patients the tools they need to dramatically reduce their stress, improve their quality of life during their cancer treatment and, most importantly, give them hope. And this can be as important as the medical treatment. I'm a perfect example. I was given no more than a year to live after being diagnosed with an aggressive form of leukemia. To say my family and I were distraught and upset is an understatement. But after finding The Wellness Community and all the services they provide, all absolutely free, my quality of life during my treatment improved, my family and I came together as one, and my positive attitude and hope led me to make certain decisions that I believe ultimately saved my life. I've had no evidence of cancer for the past nine years and can say, without qualification, that I might not be alive today if it weren't for The Wellness Community.”
- Bob Ferber, Paws 4 Hope Co-Chair

When my husband was diagnosed with Stage IV Malignant Melanoma, and given a 6-month prognosis, becoming involved with TWC V/V was an absolute life saver. We immediately started going to the Tuesday evening support groups. It was such a relief for me to be able to cry, laugh and share with others on a weekly basis. I know it was the same for him. We went for years, and we credit The Wellness Community with a major part in overcoming the disease. If The Wellness Community Valley/Ventura was not available, I know from personal experience that it would be devastating to those of us who sought, and seek, everything in our quest to battle cancer.”
- Karen Furnari, Paws 4 Hope Co-Chair

So that anyone can participate, The Wellness Community relies on funding from donors, foundations, grants, and special events like Paws 4 Hope to ensure that it can provide its programs free of charge.

*For full terms and conditions visit mgive.com/a.

Pictured above: Dexter, one of many beloved pets belonging to Bob Ferber.

Back to School…Back to Hope

It's hard to believe summer is almost over, and families are already gearing up for the “back to school” mindset. They also make friends, play games, and create art with children who can relate to their experiences.

Because pictures really are worth a thousand words, we wanted to share this drawing with you. It was done by a participant in the Westlake Village Kids Circle group when she was 8 years old. The words in each petal show what The Wellness Community means to her.

And we are pleased to share this video that illustrates what Kids Circle is all about. Because the smiling faces of children who have found emotional support at The Wellness Community express so much more than we could ever say with words.

Kids Circle meets in Westlake Village, Ventura, and Winnetka (bilingual).
